It’s the little things in life
I see one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking sights every morning at 5:30am. As Maja and I drive in to start the day and coach the morning Workshop crew, we pass through Sandymount and by a retirement home. Most mornings, sitting outside in his electric buggy, is an old man. Alone. Deep in thought. His stare is almost as deep and burning as the sunrise he’s looking out towards. Every time I see him, I get hit with different waves of emotion. Part of me thinks how beautif

Is the Age of Customer Service Dead?
One of the pillars The Workshop is built around is community. It’s a word that gets thrown around far too often without much respect for what it actually means. When Dad and I started The Workshop, we were adamant that we would never let business get in the way of our customer service. No matter how busy we got or how much we grew, our community would always come first. It’s the foundation we’re built on, and we’d do everything we could to protect it. Over the last few years,

I’m going on an adventure
This year, I did something I’ve been dreaming about since I first started CrossFit back in 2013: I qualified for the CrossFit Semifinals. If you had told 2013-me that this would happen, I would have laughed you out of the gym. Back then, my medical chart read less like an athlete’s bio and more like a car crash report. I’ve had four knee surgeries (including three ACL reconstructions), a broken jaw, torn ankle ligaments, and fractured wrists. The medical experts gave me the s

Consistently good beats occasionally great
A great man once told me: The harder you work, the luckier you get. This year has been my most successful and rewarding year to date — professionally and personally — and without doubt, the most exhausting. I’m four years into running and operating The Workshop CrossFit, and eleven years deep into gym ownership overall. It’s been incredibly rewarding… and incredibly tough. Building something from scratch demands everything you’ve got, mentally, physically, and emotionally. I

The Best Years Ahead
This week I turn 35. And I’ll be honest… I hate getting older. It scares the sh*t out of me. I always feel this urge to rewind the clock, relive certain moments, and experience life again, but this time with all the lessons I’ve learned along the way. I think the reason ageing bothers me so much is simple: I love life. I feel unbelievably lucky with the life I’ve been given, and I’m fully aware that I’ve hit the jackpot. I don’t want it to end. I want to hold onto this feel

The Girl Next Door (Why Hyrox and CrossFit can be lovers)
For the last ten years, as a proud CrossFit gym owner, the word Hyrox felt a bit like that sassy, loud, big-personality girl who suddenly moves in next door and shakes up the whole neighbourhood. Not dangerous… but definitely disruptive. And to be clear, I’m talking about Hyrox, not the neighbour. But honestly? It’s fantastic. Anything that gets more people moving, training, sweating, and caring about their health is a win in my book. That should be our goal as fitness prof

The Extermination of the Rat Within
Rat-like behaviour just riles me up these days. Maybe it’s age, or maybe I’m just more aware of it, but it feels like it’s everywhere. The entitled, the arrogant, the ones who think rules are for everyone else. And look, I’m fully aware that each week I write these little reflections and there are probably people out there saying, “Shut the hell up, Gaz. You were the Rat King.” And they’re not wrong. Because here’s the truth, I’ve let plenty of rats take advantage of me over

Canna cóla nó Sneachta?
I once got told off for drinking a can of Diet Coke. “There are so many preservatives in that! Rats probably crawl on the can.” The same person also used to scold me for eating too much beef. “The poor cows! Do you know what they’re fed?” Now, they weren’t wrong. Diet Coke isn’t exactly kale juice. And yes, cows probably deserve a better life. But this was also the same person who was doing lines of coke off a toilet seat in a nightclub. If you're snorting carcinogens, rat pi

Human Connection is at a premium
I’m a nerd at heart, always have been, always will be. I love everything from becoming Elden Lord to the walls of Helm’s Deep to picking up my wand at Olivander's. I still remember going to Universal Studios as a kid and seeing the Terminator ride. There he was, big Arnie Schwarzenegger himself, fighting the good fight against the machines. SkyNet was coming for us all. A lot of games, movies, and books predict an end-of-the-world scenario where AI takes over. Are we there
